pronoun-antecedent agreement
Pronoun antecedent agreement is where the pronoun must be the same gender and number. An antecedent is the group of words in which the pronoun is referring to or replacing.
Gender is whether a pronoun is referring to a masculine, feminine, or neuter noun. If the noun is masculine, then one must use the masculine pronoun. Some masculine pronouns are he, him, and his. If the noun is feminine, then one must use the feminine pronoun. Some feminine pronouns are she, her, and hers. If the noun has no gender or is an object, then one must use the neuter gender. Some neuter pronouns are it and its. Example: Michael is driving his car. (Michael is male, therefore you must use the masculine pronoun 'his') Number is basically another word for case. A pronoun must follow whether the noun is singular or plural. If the noun is singular, then you use the singular pronouns. Similarly, if the noun is plural, you use the plural pronouns. Example: The team won their game. (The team is made of multiple people, therefore you use the plural pronoun 'their') Exercise 1 Decide which pronoun best fits in the blanks. 1No cook understands ______ trade as well as Cody Mircalez. 2 ________ is easily the best chef in Philadelphia. 3Cody opened a restaurant in the early nineties, which _____ quickly put onto the fast track to fame. His restaurant, Philly Steak, is one of the biggest staples in Philly today. 4One couple, Kayla and Mike, say that it is some of the best food that ________ have ever had. 5 Many say that ________ favorite part of Philly is his restaurant. Exercise 2 Decide whether each pronoun is correct. If the pronoun is correct, then put correct. If the pronoun is incorrect, then correct it. 1) A lover of seafood can find his own shrimp in the grocery store 2) Someone who loves Japenese food can find their favorite spices here 3) Shoppers can visit here for all its personal needs. 4) No one was disappointed by her shopping experience 5) Everyone loves their grocery store. |
